Soul Searching

Most of us have stopped to think at some point in our lives: is God real? Perhaps after something really bad happens in our lives, or when we feel alone, or maybe when we’re amazed by the starry sky.

No one can prove whether God really exists. However there is evidence to suggest belief in God is not so crazy. Isaac Newton, the great scientist, once said ‘In the absence of any other proof, the thumb alone would convince me of God’s existence.’ Since the beginning of history it has been common for humans to believe in something beyond their own reality. We suspect we are not alone in the universe.

There are startling scientific facts that suggest God exists. The universe has to be incredibly finely tuned to make it possible for humans to exist. If, for instance, the balances of gravity and electromagnetism or carbon and oxygen were even slightly different, life on earth would be impossible. Perhaps it makes more sense to believe things were ‘finely-tuned’ by a designer, rather than a random accident.

However, none of this proves God exists, and at least as many philosophers and scientists don’t believe in God as do.

But what if God showed himself to us? What if he revealed himself to humans and said: I am real!

The bible claims that ‘since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen’ (Rom 1:20). Since the beginning, He’s been in the business of revealing himself to mankind, and getting involved! The first half of the bible (the Old Testament) is full of the history of how God intervened and saved His people from disaster.

The ultimate demonstration of this was shown in the life of Jesus, God taking on human flesh and coming to earth.

In Jesus, the character and nature of God is open for us to investigate. In fact, through Jesus we have an opportunity to a relationship with our creator.

For anyone serious about the search into God’s existence, the search into the life and person of Jesus is essential.
